Tel Aviv (JTA) — An im-
migrant who arrived from
the Soviet Union only last
week fell immediate victim
to the scourge of Israel — its
highways.
He was killed in a road
accident in Galilee on Sat-
urday.
The victim, identified as
Valery Lipsky, 25, was one
of four people killed and six
injured in three accidents
over the weekend.
The accident that took
Lipsky's life was by far the
worst. Killed with Lipsky
was Soviet immigrant
Michael Shiflev, 45, and
Shiflev's 80-year-old mother.
The third fatality was the
30-year-old Arab driver of
the vehicle that collided
with Shiflev's car on the
Carmiel-Segev road. Two
other members of the Shiflev
family, a married couple,
were injured.
Israel has the highest
highway fatality rate per
capita in the world.

Chimps Return
To The Wild

Tel Aviv (JTA) — A pair of
Israeli-born siblings who
could not adjust to life here
are on their way to their
ancestral homeland.
Choco and Leben, 5-year-
old chimpanzees, left the
Ramat Gan Safari Zoo last
week for London, from
where they will travel to
Chingula, Zambia.
The sister and brother are
the offspring of the same
father but different mothers
who apparently did not br-
ing them up properly.
Unable to find another
Israeli zoo to take them, the
Ramat Gan management
raised funds to send the
chimps, with their two
young women handlers as
escorts, to a special nature
preserve in Zambia, where
beasts born in civilization
can adjust to the wild.

To Stand Trial

Tel Aviv (JTA) — A 32-
year-old Haifa Bay area
resident will not stand trial
for two cemetery desecra-
tions last month for which
an accomplice has drawn a
stiff prison sentence.
A Haifa magistrate ruled
last week that Gershon Ten-
nenbaum, 32, of Kiryat Yam
is mentally unfit for a trial.
