tention of calling for elec-
tions for its leaders, is
beyond me."
Much of the Boston Globe's
editorial was aimed at Gen-
eral Sharon, who, it said,
may use his "dominance" of
Shamir's cabinet "as a step-
pingstone to ultimate
power." This, it warned,
would "peril" Israeli democ-
racy and security for Israel
and its neighbors.
Martin F. Nolan, the
Globe's editorial page editor,
said that the editorial was
"strong" because Sharon is
"a strong character. Over
the last several years, we've
denounced Arab terrorists
. .. We don't see Sharon as
Nobel Peace material."
But "in the long run," con-
tinued Nolan, "Israeli-
American relations will sur-
vive because Israel is a
valuable ally and is the only
democracy in the region. I
don't see a nickel of aid be-
ing cut. Aid will not be de-
termined by what happens
in Washington, but by the
facts on the grounds in the
Middle East if Iraq and other
Arab states increase ten-
sions."
Nolan's appraisal of U.S.
aid to Israel markedly
differed from the Financial
Times' recommendation that
the Bush Administration
"make it clear to Israel that
it is not prepared to sub-
sidize indefinitely to such a
great extent a country which
so willfully acts against U.S.
interests."

Arafat: Sham
Of the Mideast?

Rare is the American
columnist who defends
Yassir Arafat's refusal to
condemn the recent failed
terrorist attack on a Tel
Aviv beach.
In a Washington Times op-
ed, American University
professor of political science
Amos Perlmutter said that
Arafat's "refusal or inability
to dismantle the PLO's ter-
rorist apparatus makes him
at least politically responsi-
ble for PLO terrorist ac-
tivities . "
What the beach attack has
essentially accomplished,
said Perlmutter, "was to
discredit the State Depart-
ment's claims of PLO
moderation."
But even if Arafat did con-
demn the raid, said New
York Times'columnist A.M.
Rosenthal, "it won't make a
bit of difference, . . . not as
long as the PLO knows that
a few cynical words against
terrorism can buy what it
wants most — American
pressure against Israel."
