irst, Kirk Douglas
mastered the sport of
wrestling, turning into
a champion amateur
wrestler. Then, he overcame
the challenge of acting,
becoming one of Hollywood's
top leading men. And now
Douglas is attempting to add
a new chapter to his life — as
a writer of fiction.
Detroiters can judge for
themselves whether Douglas
has what it takes to be a suc-
cessful author. His first
novel, Dance With the Devil,
is hot off the presses. And
the Jewish Community
Center has "booked"
Douglas to speak about his
work of fiction 8 p.m. June
24 at its open annual
meeting in the Maple-Drake
building. He will also hold a
question-and-answer session
and then autograph copies of
his novel.

autobiography, The
Ragman's Son, published in
1987, Douglas put the
finishing touches on Dance

writing the novel when the
protagonist took inventory
of his life — and that af-

writing the book and took
inventory of my life."
This prompted him to
write his autobiography.
"In writing an
autobiography, the decision
you have to make is how
much courage you have to
spill out your guts, and how
honest can you be?" he said.
"In fiction, in some ways you
have to be more honest
about your feelings — but

you can do it through a fic-
tional character. So, I
thought it quite a
challenge."
Not only was The
Ragman's Son a big seller,
but early reviews of Dance
With the Devil, such as the
one in the June 10 edition of
the New York Times in-
dicate that it, too, will be a
winner.
"This is a new experience
for me. You know, when an
