Not Discouraging Aliyah, States HIAS' Leuchter SUE FLAXMAN Special to The Jewish News M y personal belief is that Soviet [emigra- tion] is the greatest thing that can happen," said Ben Zion Leuchter, presi- dent of the Hebrew Immi- grant Aid Society (HIAS), addressing the American Jewish Press Association's annual conference in New Jersey earlier this month. Leuchter rejected criticism that BIAS harmed the cause of aliya by trying to attract Soviet Jews to the United States and stated categorically that BIAS en- dorses a policy of having as many Jews as possible go to Israel, especially those who have no direct family ties in the U.S. "Almost everyone who gets into the United States will have close relatives here," he said. "Those who don't might as well not even apply. People call us, wor- ried about friends [still in the Soviet Union]. We tell them to tell their friends to go to Israel — it's the Sue Flaxman is a staff writer for the Metro West Jewish News of New Jersey. quickest way — and they must get out." According to Leuchter, the American Jewish commun- ity is "shouldering its burden." He noted that 37,500 of the 40,000 Soviet Jews scheduled for reset- tlement in the United States in this fiscal year have al- ready arrived. "We will use up the 40,000 government-allotted visa slots on schedule," he af- firmed. "The European pipeline is almost empty," Leuchter said. "There are only about 200 Soviet Jews left in Rome," particularly com- plicated individual cases or people who were too ill to travel. Leuchter noted that the biggest problem for emigres coming directly from the Soviet Union to the U.S. is that many of the Soviet Jews have trouble getting dates to be interviewed by the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service in Moscow. "Until a person gets that date," maintained Leuchter, "BIAS will have no entre to information about them. Without suffi- cient information, we cannot begin the resettlement pro- cess." LI During the coming week Yeshiva Beth Yehudah will observe the yahrzeits of the following departed friends, with the traditional memorial prayers, recitation of kaddish and stu- dying of mishnayos.
