This first-time Youth
Games sport will see a
Detroit team capable of scor-
ing in the 70s, but which,
more importantly, may help
stimulate interest in the
sport, said coach Steve
Solomon.
"We need to create inter-
est in junior golf in the Jew-
ish community," said
Solomon, who decried the
lack of interest. "There's no
organization now available
to do that."
Scott Steinlauf, who can
drive the ball 230 yards and
"knows his way around the
course," is a key team mem-
ber, said Solomon.
Some 65 players will play
36 holes as two-man teams
in the Maccabi, with the
combined low score winning
the gold medal.
Other Detroit squad
members:

Mitch Bleier, Craig Colton, Scott
Eisner, Danny Gunsberg, Jason
Levin, David Paul, Chad Wein-
baum, Daniel Wolfe, Jeremy
Wolfe.

CHESS
Coach Ron Feingold of Oak
Park, a chess master who's
been playing the game some
35 years, will have his son
Benjamin, Michigan juniors
champion, home from
Brussels, where he is a chess
professional, to help coach
the Detroit team.
Team members include
Dave Calton, a 16-year-old
who is rated an expert. Fe-
ingold also is high on recent
Soviet immigrant Greg
Khaykin.

Detroit's entry in this co-
ed sport is co-ed, but just
barely, thanks to Jeremy
Hertza, 13, son of coach Ron
Hertza and assistant coach
Diane Hertza. Hertza has
placed in state tournaments,
as has female teammate
Meryl Bender, who also
competed in last year's Mac-
cabi regional in Pittsburgh.
"There were no boys on
last year's team at Pitt-
sburgh," noted the coach.
Teams will compete in six
events. •
Rounding out the Detroit
squad:
Jennifer Feiner, Heidi Feldman,
Julie Gottesman, Debbie Hersh,
Michelle Wolfe.

KARATE

With three youngsters, all
with a year or less experi-
ence, the team is still taking
applicants, said coaches Ken
Levy and Brian Weisberger.
Both coaches are on the
staff of CATI Health Club in
Southfield, where the squad
will practice. Weisberger is a
first-degree black belt and
Junior Olympian in tae
kwon do, while Levy is
ranked 11th in the world in
kickboxing.
Squad members:
Scott Kohner, Yaacov Krieger,
Dan Stollman.

RACQUETBALL

Neil Brand and David Got-
tesman, the 13-14 age-
division players who paired
to defeat the 15-16 division
players for the gold medal in
last year's Pittsburgh re-
gional Maccabi, head up this
year's Detroit racquetball
squad.
The pair, who also were
Detroit's team in the '88
Chicago Games, head up
coach Stu Gottesman's
seven-player squad this
year.
"There'll be some very stiff
competition come August,
but my kids will give most of
the other kids a good game,"
said Gottesman, who coach-
ed the duo at Pittsburgh.
"There's been no real
coaching before," Gottesman
added. "We're trying to
teach them finesse — place-
ment of shots, maneuvers,
how to think on the court.
All seven have got natural
talent."
Rounding out the squad:
Rich Frankel, Howard Kaye, Adam
Lenter, Jason Miller, David
Rochlen.

BOYS SOCCER

The Detroit entry will be
very good defensively, said
coach Gabe Attar, but will
have the same problem it's
had since 1987: "not enough
power in the attack.
"We hold, hold, hold the
other team off defensively
until they finally score on
us, but we just don't have
somebody who can put the
ball in the net for us," he
said.
Attar, who coached last
year's entry at Pittsburgh to
the silver medal, has since
begun an under-14 team for
Detroit Maccabi and has
some scorers there, but
they're too young for the
Youth Games.
Steve Robinson is assisting
Attar in coaching.
Team members:
Philip Adler, Jeff Berger, Jason
Bressler, Shaw Brown, David

Ellenbogen, Brian Fantich, Adam
Goodman, Eric Greenwald, David
Hitsky, Andrew Horowitz, Howard
Larky, Ariel Nessel, Brandon
Robinson, David Sidder, Jeff
Starkman, Aaron Weiss.

GIRLS SOCCER

Team coach is Jay
Kirschenbaum, assisted by
Julie Goldman.
Tham members:
Sarah Alspector, Cari Aronoff,
Haley Berger, Jackie Erlich, Judi
Erlich, Marla Herman, Jenny N.
Kahn, Jenny Kahn, Danielle
Komer, Rachelle Komer, Michelle
Memran, Lisa Schreiber, Sheri
Sitron, Dana Winshall.

BOYS S014 113ALL

Three third-year Maccabi
veterans and four competing
in their second Maccabi head
up the 16-member _squad for
which 33 boys tried out, said
coach Alan Sukenic.
Many on the squad have
played either varsity, junior
varsity or freshman baseball
in school.
Craig Sukenic, Jeff Moss
and Andy Roether will be in
their third Maccabi, having
competed in Chicago and
Pittsburgh, while David
Kelman, Barry Mikelberg,
Josh Tobias and Bryan
Weiss played in Pittsburgh.
Detroit won the silver medal
in Pittsburgh.
"Our fielding and hitting
should be super," said
Sukenic, "but we're always
looking for pitchers."
Assistant coaches are
Larry Fox and Peter May.
Other team members:
Greg Berman, Daniel Frank, Justin
Geller, Eric Haron, Shawn Rubin,
Aaron Sheppard, Adam Stein,
Joshua Sukenic, Jason Wine.

GIRLS SOFTBALL

Iry Berman and Karen
Sklar are the coaches.
Squad members:
Jennifer Anchill, Stacey Berman,
Lisa Feldman, Mandy Felhandler,
Leslie Finsilver, Kim Geller, Dana
-
Lakritz, Jami Lewin, Debbie
Moses, Marni Raitt, Nicole
Rudolph, Abby Schwartzberg, Isa
Schwartzberg, Nicole Tilchen,
Stacey Weinberg.

SWIMMENG

The stronger of Detroit's
two entries in this sport will
be the girls' squad, said
coach Herb Bernstein.
"The boys are not the same
caliber of swimmer as are
the kids who'll be coming,"
said Bernstein, who will be
assisted by his daughter
Deena, who captured six
gold medals and two silvers
