$143,000, more than double
what it was estimated to fet-
ch.
The three artists were
Eastern European Jews who
spent most of their working
lives in Paris, part of the
group of prolific Jewish ar-
tists in the first four decades
of the 20th century known as
the "circle of Montpar-
nasse."
Kisling was originally
from Krakow, Poland;
Soutine a native of Smilovit-
chi, Lithuania; and Zadkine
from Smolensk, Russia.
The French painter Ber-
nard Buffet, not a member of
that group, drew double the
estimated price for two land-
scapes which sold for
$85,000 and $71,000 respec-
tively.
A record price for an
Israeli artist was achieved
for Mordechai Ardon's view
of Anatot on the Hills of
Jerusalem, painted in 1937.
It sold for $83,600, double its
estimate.
Altogether, Sotheby's Tel
Aviv chalked up a record
gross of over $3.3 million,
much of it from private
buyers.

Czech Art
Exhibit Opens

Jerusalem (JTA) — The
long-heralded exhibition of
Jewish cultural and re-
ligious treasures from
Czechoslovakia has opened
at the Israel Museum and
will continue until August.
It is a direct consequence
of the November 1989
bloodless revolution that
ended 40 years of Commu-
nist rule in Prague and led
to the re-establishment of
full diplomatic relations
with Israel.
"For many years, we tried
to bring an exhibition to
Israel, but our government
always stopped us," Dr.
Vladimir Sadek, head of the
Czech State Jewish Museum
of Prague, told the Jewish
Telegraphic Agency at the
gala opening.
The Judaica and everyday
items on display express the
richness of Jewish life in the
three regions of
Czechoslovakia: Bohemia,
Moravia and Slovakia.
Although most of the ar-
tifacts were included in the
Precious Legacy exhibition
prepared by the Smithso-
nian Foundation in 1983,
which toured the United
States, some of the items
now on display in Jerusalem
have never been seen before
in the West.
