n spite of the competition
from a Detroit Piston
basketball game, the
Jewish Theological Semi-
nary dinner June 5 at Adat
Shalom Synagogue was
packed with 400 patrons.
Honorees of the evening
included: Herman and
Pauline Canner, Milton
Gilman, Rabbi Benjamin
Gorrelick, Dr. Leon and
Hilda Lucas and Norbert
and Marianne Reinstein.
Dr. Ismar Schorsch was
the Seminary guest speaker
and presenter of the awards,
while Rabbi Harold S.
Kushner, author of When
Bad Things Happen To Good
People, was the guest
speaker.
Rabbi Benjamin Gorrelick
received the Rabbi Max Arzt
national rabbinic service
award. Since 1976, there
have been only 16 recipients
of this honor. Rabbi Gor-
relick has left his mark
in the community. He be-
gan his Detroit career at
Congregation Beth Aaron on
Wyoming and then served at
Congregation Beth Achim,
where he is rabbi emeritus.
In 1940, he received his
master's degree at Harvard
University in sociology. He
served as a United States
military chaplain during
World War II.
For 57 years, Rabbi Gor-
relick has devoted his time
to Jewish studies and re-
ligious activities. He was
one of the founders of Hillel
Day School.

BAT MITZVAH
Sarah Resnick of Bloom-

field Township is finishing
her junior year at Hebrew
University by celebrating
her bat mitzvah at the
Western Wall in Jerusalem.
She has been studying and
planning for this momentous
occasion for months. She
returns to the United States
in July and will finish her
senior year at the University
of Michigan. Sarah is the
daughter of Rachel
Resnick of Bloomfield
Township and Al Resnick of
Southfield. She is a graduate
of Andover High School and
a recipient of several schol-
arships including the Harry
and Sarah Laker Youth
Scholarship and a Hebrew
University scholarship.
