TABLE TENNIS
Steve Sampson and Brad
Shulman are returnees from
the 1988 Chicago delegation
that brought home 13
medals. But, cautions Hedy
Mantel, wife of coach Joe
and mother of assistant
coach Michelle Mantel,
"There was no Israeli team
entered then.
"They would have been a
force to contend with," she
said, adding the Israelis
coming to Detroit should
have a number of top-notch
players from the Soviet
Union, where Jews are quite
proficient in the sport.
Nevertheless, Detroit's
youngsters should benefit
from good coaching.
Michelle, now at the Univer-
sity of Michigan, is a five-
time national junior cham-
pion in the sport who coach-
ed the Detroit team in
Chicago after having won
gold medals in both the 1986
Toronto and 1984 Detroit
Maccabi Games.
Rounding out the squad
are:

Adam Chalom, Gabe Gelman, Jeff
Gutman, Jennifer Kristall, Michael
Redisch, Emily Seligson, Jason
Yourofsky, Allison Walkon.

TRACK
A young Detroit team will
be facing competition from
older, more mature athletes
but should still do well in the
relays, according to coach
Joel Kashdan.
"We have no superstars,
but we do have a lot of good
athletes," said Kashdan,
who has been coaching Mac-
cabi track since 1985. The
team should do well in the
relays "because we have a
lot of depth."
With 24 members, the
team beats by six the
previous squad in size and
includes eight returnees
from last year's team.
Merrek Sakwa, 15, whose
4:48 mile set the Bloomfield
Hills Andover freshman
school record last season,
leads the boys' delegation,
while hurdler Jeanette
Rubenstein, also 15, heads
the girls' squad, which
features nine girls who run
high school track.
The team will have two
girl shotputters: Allison
Zameck and Jodi Lesnick.
Squad members:

Sari Jo Berman, Lisa Biederman,

lanni, April Kashdan, Jason Klotz,

Twenty-three girls and 20
boys tried out for the 10-
member boys' and girls'
squads, according to coach
Ken Bertin, who said those
who didn't make the team
will be used as alternates.
Because volleyball is a
regular school sport for girls,
they are the more experi-
enced players, he said.
Courtney Kalbfeld "is ab-
solutely the most incredible
player," he said, while Evan
