ack in the 1950s
when Northland Mall
opened, the then
"country" area was a big
boom favorite for shoppers .. .
Even outdoor events during
the warm months had the
highly popular Kenneth
Schwartz productions of Nor-
thland Playhouse in the
round that featured name
stars like Keefe Brazzelle
(The Al Jolson Story), George
C. Scott and a host of other
topnotchers . . . The resident
lead wasn't a biggie then, but
he certainly is today . . .
James Colburn.
Other events included art
fairs, a circus, music under
the stars, etc.
Later came the Northland
Theatre, built to present
Hollywood's latest flicks .. .
The beautiful structure, clos-
ed now, seated 1,400 and is
now divided into two theaters.
Should be sometime this
year when Downtown
Development Authority, City
of Southfield, its new
bossfolks, opens Northland
Theatre again . . . not to show
films . . . but as a legitimate
theater.

table to repay customers for
the phone call when reserva-
tions were made . . . Or when
change in newly-minted
money was given to
customers who paid their
house accounts in cash . . . Or
the busboy acting as a page
carrying a chalkboard with
the names of customers who
had phone calls.

45 YEARS AGO, Lou Kay
and Iry Lipson became free
men . . . That's when they
were liberated from the
Nazis, April 11, 1945.
Lou and Iry met on a train
going from Poland to Buchen-
wald, Dora and Northassen,
Germany . . . crammed into a
freight car like cattle.
One of the soldiers in
General Dwight Eisenhower's
102nd American division,
Detroiter Ruby Kress, was
among the liberators at
Northassen.
Localite Steve Lewkowicz
was also freed from Buchen-
wald on the same day.
Lou and Iry came to Detroit
in 1949 . . . Iry and wife
