was 20, he moved with his
family to Los Angeles and it
was there that his all-
consuming devotion to the
music he loved paid off. He
met pianist/composer Oscar
Levant's widow, June, and
through her secured an in-
troduction to Ira Gershwin,
the legendary lyricist and
brother of the great composer.
For the next six years, un-
til Ira Gershwin's death in
1983, Feinstein catalogued

Michael Feinstein
Gershwin's records, music
and memorabilia, frequently
acting as Ira Gershwin's sur-
rogate in matters pertaining
to publication and/or perfor-
mance of Gershwin's works.
He also became, in his words,
"the son Ira never had!"
"Ira is the one who taught
me how to interpret a lyric!"
Feinstein says. "He encourag-
ed my performing, telling me
to practice, practice, practice.
In truth, I could never have
given him as much as he gave
me."
The six years Feinstein
spent with Gershwin provid-
ed him with one all-
consuming goal: to ensure the
proliferation and perpetua-
tion of American classic
popular song, an art form, he
feels, that is to this country
what the waltz is to Vienna or
the opera to Italy.
After Gershwin's death,
Feinsten decided to try perfor-
ming, as his mentor had sug-
gested, and he met with
almost immediate success.
Although he admits he is not
a great singer or piano player,
he does seem to have the gift
for putting a song over with
enough enthusiasm and
warmth that has made him
the darling of the cabaret set
all over the country.
In short order, he made
several record albums, played
sold-out engagements
throughout the United
States, and went on tour with
one of his biggest fans, Liza
Minelli. He also appeared in
concert at the White House
and was presented with the
official New York City Seal of
Recognition.
