SUMMER SPECIALS!

ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER'S

Others stand and talk outside
the brownstones along the
street, most of them Lubavit-
cher owned.
When the Lubavitchers
decided to start their own
community in Crown
Heights, they bought proper-
ties with the aid of loans from
the Hebrew Free Loan Socie-
ty. Then, when other Jews of
Crown Heights started to
move out in the 1960s
because of the changing
neighborhood, the Lubavit-
chers held firm. The Rebbe
even called on his followers
not to move.
Not only do they own many
of the buildings on Eastern
Parkway, but they also have
political clout. On Saturdays,
traffic is diverted from where
many synagogues are located
and where worshippers walk
to and from services.
Back in the van, we head
for Borough Park, even more
of a Jewish neighborhood
than Crown Heights. We
hurry because this is Friday,
and by 3 p.m. everything
closes.
When we reach 13th
Avenue, heart of the
neighborhood, the street
hums with pre-Sabbath ac-
tivity. Customers are buying
challah, kosher chicken,
vegetables and fruit from the
numerous food stores.
Other stores sell prayer
shawls, Yiddish records, and
clothes, which hang outside
on racks, making this avenue
Brooklyn's version of Orchard
Street on the Lower East
Side.
Besides Chasidic Jews,
Borough Park's residents in-
clude Jews from Yemen,
Lebanon, Syria and Egypt.
The Yemenites have their
own synagogues, and social
clubs, and even their own
kosher pizza parlors, which
we see as we take a quick
stroll on this busy street.
On the road again, we ride
past the mansions of Flat-
bush. Then we ride along
Ocean Parkway, almost like a
boulevard in Paris except that
on this wide three mile
stretch there are 27
synagogues and numerous
yeshivot.
We're almost at the ocean
now, as we reach the
shorefront communities —
Coney Island, Seagate,
Manhattan Beach and
Brighton — that are also part
of this vast borough, which is
three times the size of
Manhattan. By the 1960s,
over half the residents of
these beachfront com-
munities were Jewish — and
many still are.
On Brighton Beach Avenue,
we see the Black Sea Book-.
store, with cyrillic letters
