white hope.'

believable; he's so polished."
Martinez said Duke tried
to use Martinez's presence in
Louisiana to show that
David Duke, the candidate,
is no longer the man who pa-
raded around wearing a
Nazi uniform and was grand
wizard of the Knights of the
Ku Klux Klan.
"If Martinez can change,
don't you think David Duke
can change?" Martinez
quoted Duke. Martinez also
said that in Louisiana, Duke
denied knowing him. Mar-
tinez then produced two
photographs: One showed
"Duke and me in my house,
shaking hands." The other
showed Duke with Mar-
tinez's daughter. Duke then
said, "Yeah, I met him for 30
seconds."
Actually, said Martinez,
who served as an area
recruiter for the Klan, he
and Duke spent three days
together in Philadelphia in
1978, and Duke held a
meeting in Martinez's house
with area Klan activists.
Martinez later left the
Klan to join the neo-Nazi
National Alliance and after
being in that group for a
time was associated with the
white supremacist group
called the Order.
He eventually was ar-
rested for passing the
Order's counterfeit money
and went on to help the FBI
break up the Order. His ex-
periences are detailed in a
book he co-wrote called
Brotherhood of Murder.
Martinez expressed con-
cern over what he sees as a
failure among Jews and
blacks to aggressively corn-
bat Duke. "I think some of
the Jewish community are
just starting to realize that
we're in some trouble here."
He said the impression he
got in Louisiana is that
"people down there are not
too sympathetic to Jewish
people." In addition, he said,
Duke supporters will use
efforts by Jews to expose
Duke against Jews, saying,
"It's always the Jews
against us Christians."
