zhak Rabin a follow-up ques-
tion to the one he asked
before Rabin went in. And
he speaks of his pride in
Israel's openness despite the
constant media scrutiny.
"Could any reporter walk
up to President George Bush
and ask him a question?"
Schechter says. "Could any-
one get close enough? In
Israel, it's a common occur-
rence to approach a leader
with a camera and
microphone."
Schechter attributes this
openness to Israel's mixture
of West and Middle East.
"So you have Western style
news reporting in a
shuk(open-air market) envi-
ronment. You joust a bit
more. There's more body
contact."
Both say their experiences
in Israel strengthened their
Jewish identity. Galex hopes
to pass to her child a strong
knowledge of Judaism and a
bit of the old family
wanderlust. Says she: "It's
hard to appreciate another
person's history until you
appreciate your own." ❑

El AI Plans
To Buy Into
U.S. Airline

Tel Aviv (JTA) — El Al is
planning to buy almost a
quarter of the shares in Nor-
th American Airlines (NAA),
a five- month-old U.S.
airline, which the Israeli na-
tional carrier has been using
to ferry its passengers arriv-
ing at, or departing from,
Kennedy Airport to des-
tinations in Miami and Los
Angeles.
The Israeli Transport Min-
istry and El Al's temporary
receiver, Amram Blum,
ratified the plans, as El Al
assured them that the
$400,000 investment, which
will buy 24.9 percent of Nor-
th American's stock, should
save it some $3 million a
year by the use of the
American company's one
leased Boeing 757 plane
rather than using El Al's
own jumbo jets.
U.S. law stipulates that no
foreign entity may own more
than 25 percent of an Ameri-
can airline.
The NAA Boeing 757
operates with 32 business-
class and 159 economy-class
seats. Most of NAA's busi-
ness is generated at present
from its connections with El
Al, and from ferrying Club
Med vacationers to
Guadeloupe, Martinique and
Mexico.
