Audrey Lester, head of
Renaissance High's guid-
ance and counseling depart-
went, has seen the way
blacks tend to stick with
blacks and white students
pick white friends. This isn't
the case in school-related
programs — just in social
situations, she says.
One of the students who
works best with students of
all backgrounds and races is
Freddy Rosenthal, Lester
says.
"He mingles and inter-
relates very well with the
students. He's outgoing, gets
along with everybody,"
which can be a challenge for
other white students at the
school, she says.
Freddy will be gone from
Renaissance after this week,
but he leaves behind Julie
Becker, Aaron Katz, his
sister, Amy, and others still
finding their way through a
maze of difficult issues.
They seem to travel from
path to path, wondering
about their Judaism, about
how they should react to
racist comments, about how
they fit in as a racial and
religious minority, about
how their experiences today
will affect them in the
future.
For Amy, an aspiring ac-
tress, one of the most com-
plicated questions is how to
disagree with a special pro-
gram for blacks without of-
fending anyone.
"It's a no-win situation;'
she says. "If I say that affir-
mative action is wrong, if I
say what I really feel, people
will be angry with me."
In one of Amy's classes,
students regularly write in
journals. Amy once wrote
that she disagreed with an
educational program that
excluded white students.
The teacher called on
several pupils to read from
their journals. Amy was
among them.
"Everybody thought I was
prejudiced," she recalls.
"What I was trying to say is
that I just wish everything
could be equal." ❑

Four Charged
In French Case
Paris (JTA) — Four upper-
middle-class youths were ar-
rested Monday in Carpen-
tras and will be charged
with the May 9-10 desecra-
tion of the city's Jewish
cemetery, the police an-
nounced.
The identities of the
suspects are being withheld
because all are minors. Two
of the four are high school
students.
The police, calling the ar-
rests a major breakthrough,
said the youths belong to
upper-middle-class families
and have no known connec-
tions with neo-Nazi or other
extremist movements.
The arrests in a residential
district of Carpentras ended
a month-long investigation of
a crime that outraged world
opinion for its savage racism
and triggered a series of
allegedly copycat incidents
at Jewish cemeteries
elsewhere.
Office Raided,
Inquiry Begins
Jerusalem (JTA) — Police
on Sunday raided the offices
of Interior Minister Arye
Deri, launching an inquiry
that could shoot down the
rising political star of the
ultra- Orthodox Shas party.
They acted on charges,
first published June 1 in
Yediot Achronot, alleging
that Deri used his authority
as director general of the
Interior Ministry and later
as interior minister for per-
sonal gain.
