The students wanted Car-
dinal Szoka, who is going to
the Vatican to take a new
position in the Church, to
deliver a bundle of letters to
Pope John Paul II about an-
ti-Semitism.
Although the Cardinal
asked that the 44 letters be
mailed to the Vatican be-
cause he would be too busy,
the students still hope their
message will have a strong
impact on the Pope.
Last month, Rhonna
Adelstein's and Riva That-
ch's sixth-grade classes at
Hillel studied the Holocaust.
Thatch, who teaches Heb-
rew, told students about her
Holocaust experiences in
Lithuania and a Polish con-
centration camp.
Thatch thought if the chil-
dren wrote letters to a public
figure asking him to speak
out against anti-Semitism, it
would make the lesson more
meaningful. "The kids felt
the Pope is a very important
person," Thatch said. "Peo-

To Stop Anti-Semitism

doesn't represent, respect

In their letters, some
students asked the Pope to
use his position as a world
leader to halt the spread of
anti-Semitism.
Meghann Stamper, 11,
wrote, "You're a leader and
lots of people listen to you. I
was wondering if you could
please_ tell everyone that
Jews aren't bad."
The shortest letter belongs
to Josh Sherman, 11, who
wrote, "Please stop anti-
Semitism. It's pointless. As a
religious leader, please help
all of us."
Robert Lynn, 11, asked the
Pope to speak out against
anti-Semitism whenever he
had a chance. "All people
should be treated fairly, no
matter what religion they
practice," Lynn wrote.
Other students like
Samara Shlom told the Pope
that the Holocaust should
never be repeated.
"I want my Christian
friends to understand and
learn about the Holocaust,"
Samara wrote. "Together we
can prevent this awful, in-
humane tragedy from hap-
pening to anyone again. You
are a respected world leader,
and I'm just a 12-year-old
girl hoping I won't have
nightmares tonight. Please
remember to remind every-
one about the Holocaust so
we can treat each other with
dignity." ❑
