DESIGNER EYEWEAR SALE! I DETROIT Orley Will Lead Jewish Charities Graham A. Orley was elected president of the United Jewish Charities at its annual meeting this week at 'Temple Beth El. Elected with him were: Shirley Harris, Michael W. Maddin and Jack A. Robin- son, vice-presidents; Larry Sherman, treasurer; and Robert P. Aronson, secretary. Named to the board of direc- tors were: Harold Blumens- tein, Martin Goldman, John Haddow, Bart Lewis and Joel Shapiro. Mandell L. Berman was named an honorary life member. Orley is a member of the Jewish Welfare Federation Board of Governors and was a major gifts chairman of the 1990 Allied Jewish Cam- paign. He served as vice presi- dent of UJC and chairman of its real estate committee. His other affiliations in- clude: Israel Bonds, Con- gregation Shaarey Zedek, Jewish War Vetrans, Tech- nion, Weizmann Institute, Men's ORT and Franklin Hills Country Club. The UJC works with the Graham Orley Jewish Welfare Federation and its agencies to coordinate fundraising and social ser- vices. It oversees the maintenance of communal properties and manages en- dowment funds for future communal needs. UJC monies enhance those raised by the Allied Jewish Campaign. An attorney who usually contributes $500 gave $10,000 to the emergency campaign. A gift of $25,000 came by mail. A young man who delivers bagels gave a gift of $500. A donor doubled his gift at each of the two ma- jor Operation Exodus fund- raising meetings. Teens are planning a city- wide Operation Exodus youth fund-raiser for the fall. Reservations are still being taken for the Exodus Mission Congregations and organizations will continue their Operation Exodus phonathons 5-9 p.m. June 19 and 21. Sept. 5-16 for contributors of $5,000 or more (including an Operation Exodus gift) to the 1991 Allied Jewish Cam- paign.
