New York (JTA) — Stage

five decades with his un-
mistakable Jewish charac-
ters, died last week. He
was 81.
Gilford, born Jacob
Gellman, was raised on the
lower east side of Manhattan

Other stage roles included

He came back strong after-
ward, however, adding televi-
sion appearances and a stint
as the Crackerjack
spokesman and stage credits.
Gilford's most recent
heralded screen performance

where he played a nursing
home resident suddenly filled
with youthful vigor by alien
beings.
He also recently played a
kindly rabbi on the television
series "thirtysomething," in
an episode in which one of the
characters was wrestling with
his Jewish identity.
