conflicting values would be
worth hearing and that ap-
propriate inquiries would fall
into the category of "asking
tough questions." Yet Carter
escaped accountability to the
press and the public, and one
can only guess at his political
agenda.
The dual standard, of
course, is nothing new. Israel
has been subject to more than
its share of criticism and it is
unlikely that the media will
suddenly awake and balance

the scales of critical coverage.
This kind of media scrutiny,
unfortunately, does little
other than to increase
outrage and frustration. It
also leads to charges of
paranoia, a charge which has
been leveled at Jews general-
ly when they identify what
they perceive to be the in-
justice of anti-Semitism.
If it is paranoia, then the
media might consider
whether it developed because
of the environment. IEI

tions Council said it would
now participate in welcom-
ing Mandela.
The Conference of Presi-
dents of Major American
Jewish Organizations,
American Jewish Com-
mittee, American Jewish
Congress and the ADL all
issued statements welcom-
ing Mandela to the United
States.
But there was not univer-
sal agreement in the Jewish
community on that point.
The Zionist Organization
of America announced Mon-
day that while it was
"encouraged" by the reports
from Geneva, it would abs-
tain from greeting the black
South African leader.
Arnold Wagner, chairman
of ZOA's national executive
committee, said that
Zionists were not
"comfortable" with
Mandela's stand that Israel
should return to its 1967
borders as well as the fact
that Mandela has not repu-
diated the 1975 United
Nations resolution equating
Zionism with racism.
Rabbi Fabian Schonfeld,
president of the Poale
Agudath Israel of America,
condemned the Geneva
meeting, calling the Jewish
leaders who participated
"sycophants" who
"degraded" themselves by
traveling to see Mandela.
New York City Coun-
cilman Noach Dear, State
Assemblyman Dov Hikind
and Bronx Rabbi Avraham
Weiss have indicated they
may demonstrate against
Mandela during the June 20
New York ticker-tape pa-
rade for him. But the three
said they are trying to meet
with New York Mayor David
Dinkins to negotiate the
matter.
The South Africa meeting
was arranged by two of
Mandela's longtime Jewish
friends and allies in the
struggle against apartheid,
Suzman and I.A. Maisels, an
attorney.
The meeting was also at-
tended by Thabo Mbekl, a
member of the ANC exec-
utive committee; the chief
rabbi of South Africa, Cyril
Harris; Professor Michael
Katz, president of the South
African Jewish Board of
Deputies; Solly Sacks,
chairman of the South
African Zionist Federation;
and its vice chairman, Ab-
raham Abrahamson.

Holocaust Memorial
The Ann Arbor Holocaust
Memorial Foundation held its
annual meeting, electing the
following officers: president
Robert Levy; vice presidents
Roma Solent, Larry Crockett;
treasurer Susan Coran;
secretary Jack Edelstein.
The foundation was
established in 1989 to imple-
ment a resolution passed by
the Ann Arbor City Council
calling for the creation of a
memorial to the millions of
Jews and other victims of
Nazi atrocities committed
during World War II.
Once a site has been obtain-
ed, the foundation will spon-
sor a design competition to at-
tract proposals from artists.
Design guidelines for the
memorial include an educa-
tional element, and a univer-
sal message to all peoples.
Private funding will be rais-
ed by the foundation to cover
the costs of the competition
and the memorial
construction.
