Handleman Wins Local Emmy The Detroit Chapter of the National Academy of Televi- sion Arts and Sciences at its annual awards ceremony last month recognized Philip Handleman's production of Remembering the Holocuast as Michigan's best documen- tary of 1989 with the bestowal of its Emmy. Remembering the Holocaust is a remembrance of one of history's most horrible moments. The sad story of the Holocaust is told in interview segments with seven survivors. This documentary was distributed nationally by the Public Broadcasting Service and carried by many PBS af- filiates across the country, in- cluding the PBS flagship sta- tion WNET in New York, dur- ing Holocaust Remembrance Week in May 1989. Locally, the documentary was aired by WTVS/Channel 56. The interviews and archival material that comprise the documentary were obtained from the Holocaust Memorial Center in West Bloomfield. Founded by Rabbi Charles Rosenzveig, a Holocaust sur- vivor, and opened in September, 1984, the HMC is among the world's leading repositories of information about the Holocaust. The seven Holocaust sur- vivors whose interviews are included in the documentary are David Bergman, Alex- ander Ehrmann, Nathan Garfinkel, Nathan Nothman, Abe Pasternak, Irene Petrinitz and Shari Weiss. The documentary was pro- duced by Philip Handleman who devoted several months to an intensive screening of more than 60 Holocaust sur- vivor interviews in the HMC's archives, In explaining his reasons for producing Remembering the Holocaust, Handleman said, "It is only through con- stant vigilance that we can hope to prevent a recurrence of this tragic chapter in the history of mankind. At this time when revisionists are espousing the notion that there never was a Holocaust or that its scope was minimal, this documentary stands as strong and dramtic refuta- tion.'
