Jewish Artists
Receive Awards

A piece by Rachmaninoff,
performed by a newly-arrived
Russian Jewish emigre who
has already made his mark as
a concert pianist, and a
finger-snapping song from
Fiddler on the Roof sung by
Theodore Bikel, set the tone
for the kick-off event announ-
cing the First Annual Jewish
Cultural Achievement Award
winners.
Held in April at the
home of Edward and Susie
Elson in New York, the even-
ing's program highlighted
past contributions by Jewish
artists to American culture,
in order to raise support for
future creativity through
plans for a new grants pro-
gram in the arts.
Alexander Paley, the
featured performer, won the
Young Artist Debut Competi-
tion in New York last year,
and has performed as
recitalist and orchestral
soloist through Europe, the
Soviet Union and the United
States. At age 16 he won the
National Competition of
Moldavia and went on to
receive major awards in
Europe. He recently made his
U.S. orchestral debut at Alice
Tully Hall with the New York
Symphony.
The Jewish Cultural
Achievement Awards pro-
gram is a new initiative of the
National Foundation for
Jewish Culture designed to
celebrate artistic contribu-
tions to American Jewish life.
This year's awardees are
George Segal, sculptor; Hugo
Weisgall, composer; Jerry
Bock, Sheldon Harnick and
Joseph Stein, the creators of
Fiddler on the Roof, and The
