Klezmer Band
At Beth Shalom

Shalom's annual Frank
Friedman Concert, set for
8 p.m. June 17, will feature
The Ethnic Connection, an
Ann Arbor klezmer band.
The program will be in the
sanctuary at the synagogue
in Oak Park.
Klezmer music, from the
Yiddish word for musician,
refers to music played by
Jewish bands in Eastern
Europe before World War II.
In addition to Yiddish and
Hebrew tunes, the klezmer
bands played whatever the
local residents wanted to hear
and dance to, including
Romanian horahs, Serbian
kolos, Greek syrtos, polkas
and waltzes.
The five members of the
Ethnic Connection sing and
play a variety of instruments,
including accordion, piano,
clarinet, mandolin, guitar,
trumpet, balalaika and the
huge contra-bass balalaika.
There is no charge.
