parties in the conflict are
sometimes asked to sign an
agreement accepting the deci-
sion of the Bais Din.
"Even if the law of a secular
court is the same as the
religious law, it is considered
to be a desecration of God's

name to take the matter to an
outside tribunal." If a party in
a dispute refuses to submit to
the ruling of a Bais Din, the
dispute may be taken to a
secular court in an attempt to
enforce the ruling of the
religious tribunal. ❑

Brussels (JTA) — The Eu-
ropean Community has con-
demned the attempted ter-
rorist attacks on crowded
Israeli beaches May 30 and
at the same time called for
U.N. intervention in the
Israeli-administered ter-
ritories.
A statement issued here
Saturday on behalf of the
E.C.'s 12 member states
called the status quo in the
territories "not sus-
tainable."
It added that the "United
Nations can and should play
a useful role in the present
situation, particularly in re-
lation to the protection of the
population."
The statement added that
the 12 nations "condemn
without reservation all such
acts, and they repeat their
appeal for calm and re-
straint."
The E.C. statement said

that it and "its member
states are resolved to step up
their support for the obser-
vance of the human rights of
the population of the oc-
cupied territories and have
already commenced ac-
tivities in this respect."
The E.C. recalled that it
had earlier deplored the May
20 massacre of seven Pales-
tinian day laborers near
Rishon le-Zion by a lone
Israeli gunman, and the
deaths of several Palestin-
ians in subsequent riots in
the territories.
The E.C. noted "the alarm-
ing build-up of actions and
reactions since these tragic
events," culminating in "the
attempted terrorist attack
on the Israeli coast."
The statement went on to
reiterate the E.C.'s favored
route to a Middle East peace
settlement, through an
international conference.
