Jewish Feminist
Journal Debuts

Why a new Jewish fern-
inist magazine? Because,
said Clare Kinberg, manag-
ing editor of Bridges, the
newest such magazine in the
country, "there has been a
large movement of women
who have been involved in
the feminist movement who
are Jewish. Bridges is
designed for these women to
whom feminism and
Judaism speak, and which
sometimes vie with each
other. Or sometimes don't
mesh."
Bridges, which is based in
Seattle, will be published
twice a year. Its "core edito-
rial group" and "advisory
editorial board" includes
poet Adrienne Rich, novelist
Grace Paley, gay activist
Andy Rose and Harvey Brod
of Kenyon College, probably
the nation's only professor of
Gender Studies.
Bridge's first issue in-
cludes poetry, fiction, songs
(lyrics and music), book re-
views and three longish ar-
ticles on Jewish feminism.
In one of these, an assistant
professor of English at
Baruch-City University of
New York, says, "Some Jew-
ish women have found that
sexism and homophobia in
mixed groups often impede
their ability to address the
Middle East crisis . . . For
others, the lack of a feminist
perspective on this crisis has
also been a factor in pushing
them toward their own wo-
men's groups." ❑

Israel, S. Korea
Sign Science
Accord Pact

Tel Aviv (JTA) — A scien-
tific cooperation agreement
has been signed between the
Israel Academy of Sciences
and its South Korean
counterpart, the first of its
kind between Israel and a
Southeast Asian country,
according to a report in
Davar.
The agreement was reach-
ed following consultations
between the president of the
Korean Academy of
Sciences, who is currently on
an official visit to Israel, and
the Council of the Israeli
Academy of Sciences.
South Korea has no em-
bassy in Israel, and esti-
mates are that this agree-
ment will be an important
step in strengthening the
technological and scientific
ties between the two.
