sportscaster who also has
worked as a statistician for
visiting NBA basketball
teams and their broad-
casters the last seven years,
is finding himself out of
work for the NBA Finals,
but definitely not out of a
good seat.
Shafran, who occupied the
scorer's table seat nearest
the visiting team for about
50 NBA games at the Palace
this season, decided to buy
back the season ticket he's
held for 14 years rather than
risk working the series from
the CBS-TV production
truck outside.
His seat is at midcourt,
seven rows behind the
scorer's table. ❑

Brook of Southfield, the

"Let it be known that, if
the Trailblazers dare to win
even one game of the NBA
Finals between now and
June 19, the Detroit
technical support staff will
not be available for any

"We haven't heard from
them yet," Brook said at

Bernard H. Stollman will
lead Detroit's Operation
Aliyah, the Israel Bond cam-
paign for the absorption of
Soviet and other Jewish im-
migrants in Israel.
The appointment was an-
nounced by Jerome Soble,
Detroit general chairman of
the Bond campaign.
Israel Prime Minister Yit-
zhak Shamir and Finance
Minister Shimon Peres have
called upon the Bond
Organization to produce $1
billion in sales in 1990 to be
used to integrate the
newcomers into the
mainstream of Israel's
society.
"On the basis of the present
numbers of Soviet newcomers,
we estimate that we will have
to build about 35,000 housing
units, 300 new classrooms in
our schools, and bigger ulpan
facilities for the thousands of
adult students," said Shamir.
"The cost of such an under-
taking is estimated at more
than $1 billion for every
100,000 olim."
"Operation Aliyah is par-
ticularly important in light of
recent reports of anti-Semitic
incidents in the Soviet
Union," said Stollman.
"Given the higher interest
that several Israel Bond in-
struments earn, we hope that
increased investment in
Bonds by the Detroit Jewish
community will come to
realization. This is not an
Israeli project but a Jewish
project — and we need the
help of everyone, at any level
of Bond purchase," Stollman
said.
Stollman has been involved
in the Israel Bond program
for a number of years and
Bernard Stollman
serves on the local Bonds ex-
ecutive board. Both he and
his wife, Barbara, are
members of the Bonds' Presi-
dent's Club, and Mrs.
Stollman serves as national
chairman of the Israel Bond
Women's Division.
Stollman is on the ex-
ecutive committee of Bar-Ilan
University and was recently
selected to be general co-
chairman, with Doreen
Hermelin, of its Detroit ac-
tivities. In 1987 he was chair-
man of its leadership develop-
ment committee.
He has been president of
the Resettlement Service
since 1983, served as chair-
man of the Real Estate Divi-
sion of the Allied Jewish
Campaign and is a former
member of the Jewish
Welfare Federation's Culture
and Education Division. He is
a past board member of the
Anti-Defamation League. Na-
tionally, he is a member of the
board of directors of HIAS.
