Jewish education is assur-
ing a Jewish future in
Hungary.
A network of Talmud
Torahs serves students at
Hungary's secular schools.
Enrollment at the Anne
Frank Gymnasium (High
School) and at the Jewish
summer camp continues to
grow. The rabbinical
seminary in Budapest is be-
ing upgraded and expanded
to provide rabbis throughout
Eastern Europe, including
the USSR. Young families are
returning to their ancestral
birthplace.
Hungary's 70,000 Jews also
are celebrating the reopening
of the famous Szeged
Synagogue which has been
restored with the help of the
Hungarian government and
the American Jewish Joint
Distribution Committee
(JDC). Maintained in
perpetuity by the city of Szeg-
ed, the synagogue will have a
dual purpose — to remain as
a house of prayer and a sym-
phony hall. In Budapest, the
magnificent Dohany
Synagogue is the center of
Jewish life.
In the past year, a new
Jewish hospital has opened in
Budapest. The city also has
kosher butcher shops and
Jewish newspapers and
magazines.
The JDC received permis-
sion from the Hungarian
government to reopen its of-
fice there, enabling the
"Joint" to provide and sup-
port cultural and educational
programs, with support from
Detroit's Allied Jewish
Campaign.
The Dohany Synagogue,
the rabbinical seminary and
museums housing treasures
of the Jewish past, such as
Maimonides' handwritten
manuscripts, will be among
the sites included in the
itinerary for persons who
choose the Hungary pre-
mission option for Detroit's
Exodus Mission Sept. 5-16.

The mission also will offer
a choice of two other pre-
mission destinations —
Poland and Russia. The three
groups will convene in Israel
for a combined celebration.
Misssion participants will
meet with Soviet Jewish im-
migrants and see the absorp-
tion process first hand. There
also will be meetings with
Israeli officials, cultural ac-
tivities, social events, ar-
cheological explorations and
entertainment.
Contributors of $5,000 or
more to the 1991 Allied
Jewish Campaign are eligible
to participate.
