Songbook is the story of Moony Shapiro, an Irish lad raised in a Liverpool or- phanage who immigrates to America, where he is adopted by a Jewish couple. An overnight songwriting success with his East River Rhapsody, Moony was in- spired by his adopted father's music students — George, Ira, Cole, Irving, Jerome and others. Moony took the music world by storm as he wrote his way from the 1920s through the 1970s. His biggest claim to fame was the 1948 musical, Happy Hickory, which in the 1950s toured Tel Aviv and Moscow. Unfortunately, it closed before it opened in both cities due to political turbulence. Five performers take on more than 110 roles to recreate Moony Shapiro's world over six decades. The players include Marie Boyle, Susan Felder, Tom Helmer, Paul Kerr and James Vezina. The almost familiar but wholly original score by Mon- ty Norman and Julian More won the London (England) West End Theatre Award. The director of Songbook is Jim Baird, who won the Best Director Award from the Detroit Free Press and the Detroit News for his co- directing of the Hilberry Theatre's 1988 production of Nicholas Nickleby. 44.
