Jefferson St. Clair Shores avid, I hardly recog- nized you. You have your hands in your own pockets," joked emcee Mort Crim as he introduced premiere fundraiser Dave Hermelin. It was the recent eighth an- nual Michigan Cancer Foun- dation dinner at Westin Hotel. Mort did an excellent job . . . speeches were short, food very good, fine music by Johnny Trudell and wonder- ful entertianment by Jerry Lewis, who said the timing of his being in town for a cancer benefit "was eerie." During his performance, Jerry told the guests, "I know that there a lot of people out there like me who are grateful there are so many people out there like you." His performance, following the tragic loss of Jerry's friend, Sammy Davis, Jr., to throat cancer, was especially poignant. Over 1,200 people ap- preciated the evening . . . as the fight against cancer took another giant step forward. GET WELL wishes . . . to Jack Marcuson recuperating from surgery at Beaumont Hospital . . . No doubt news that his son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Cally Marcuson, presented him with a new grand- daughter, Amanda Chrystie, helped speed up his recovery. IN AN INTERVIEW before he died, Sammy Davis Jr. said, "If I can pass a baton to someone to carry on after me, it would go to Gregory Hines." Multi-talented Hines is following in Sammy's tap steps by agreeing to come to Detroit to perform and help raise money for Israel's Friends of Kaplan Medical Center and AIDS research. Putting together a major fundraiser is not all work, it can be fun and rewarding .. . That's why the Friends of Kaplan Medical Center and AIDS Research, headed by Lou Golden, is throwing a kick-off party, June 11, 7:30 p.m., at Ginopolis' On The Grille, Middlebelt and 12 Mile . . . Those wanting to be part of this very fine event, and help Lou, too, are welcome to attend. For more information, call Les Lee Roland, 559-1144; or Sandi Cherrin, 661-9931. JEWELRY DEPT. . . . Susan Grant and Larry Brohman are engaged for a June 1, 1991 wedding . . . Lori Sherman is wearing a ring from Steve Hartz for an "I Do" session June 2, 1991 .. . Susan and Steve are staff writers at The Jewish News. FROM THE TIME she was 8-years-old, Paula Lebowitz has had Chron's disease, also known as ileitis . . . but never allowed it to get her down. She was in and out of hospitals until 13, when Paula had surgery . . . The il- lness returned six years later and she was again operated on . . . Then came another operation to remove her gall bladder. However, through it all, Paula graduated with honors from Wayne State University, earning a degree in marketing . . . Recently, she and hubby Jeff had their se- cond son. Paula works as a represen- tative for Whitehall Phar- maceutical Co. . . . and this year was given the "Outstan- ding Medical Sales Rep Of The Year" award. Much reason for friends and relatives to be very proud of this 32-year-old gal who over- came a sickly childhood to become a top name in her field . . . and certainly a magnificent inspiration • to others. FUNDRAISING EVENT by Partners of Michigan Cancer Foundation is June 9, 8 p.m., at Englander's Other Place on Woodward in Royal Oak . . . Live music, fashion show, hors d'oeuvres and cash bar . . .
