RATED NO. 1 BY FAMOUS CHEFS
Closet." In 1980, under a
Michigan Arts council grant,
he composed the incidental
music for a presentation of
"The Turn of the Screw." A
program at the Grosse Pointe
Shores' Edsel Ford House in
1985 marked the debut of
Gottlieb's "Sonata for Piano
and Cello" — a lyrical work of
many colors.
"All the time," Gottlieb
says, "I was becoming a bet-
ter composer, getting closer
an closer to saying what I
really want to say correctly."
Given that the classical
world is so often concerned
with the right schools and the
right degrees, Gottlieb's train-
ing has been unconventional.
A friend taught him to read
notes. He learned notation on
his own.
"I was so inspired," he says.
"All of the sudden, when I
heard this new music — like
Stravinsky's "Rites of
Spring" — I said, 'I want to do
this!' So I practiced and prac-
ticed and got scores and ask-
ed questions. I was so
smitten.
"The real study of music is
in the scores of the masters,
period. I studied with a cou-
ple of wonderful people. As a
composer, I think you should
find someone you like, whose
opinion you respect, who you
think is a good teacher and
study with that person.
Become friends, have dinner
together and ask all the right
questions.
"Then, study scores. Have
scores in your car. And have
them in your bathroom. And
read the scores! Then you see
how the music is constructed.
The greatest teacher for a
composer would be a conduc-
tor."
Gottlieb's current scores are
being produced on the island
of Maui, where he now lives.
A less serious soul might be
tempted to go Don Ho in that
idyllic orchids-and-hula set-
ting. But Gottlieb is not one
to be way-lei-ed by seductive
surroundings.
"It's my emotional inside-
stuff that inspires me," he ex-
plains. "That's not really af-
fected by the physical en-
vironment. On an island like
this it's very easy to com-
promise and blend in. So, I
truly indulge in my emo-
tional stuff."
The days of being adrift
have passed. "I was invited to
navigate to Tahiti," Gottlieb
says, "and I chose not to.
Because I have to write
music."
