JWF Offering Exodus Mission Visitors to Israel will be able to watch the absorption of Soviet Jews and their first experience living freely as Jews. Detroit's Exodus Mission Sept. 5-16, will welcome the new immigrants as they disembark at Ben-Gurion Airport, meet with the new arrivals and the Israelis who are assisting with their ab- sorption and socialize with them in their homes. The mission participants will also explore Jewish- Christian relations with the Greek Orthodox Patriarch and meet both with Palesti- nians and with Israeli ac- tivists who believe in a "Greater Israel." The Exodus Mission will visit many of Israel's sites and landmarks, among them Yad Vashem and the newly dedicated Valley of Destroyed Communities; the Jerusalem Museum; the Western Wall; and, nearby, Detroit's Project Renewal sister city, Yavne. They will also have a special opportunity to ex- perience what life was like for Jews living in the year 1 B.C.E. At the Cardo Culinaria, groups will be invited to dine in an at- mosphere and on the foods familiar to upper class, Roman-influenced Jerusa- lemites. An information meeting about the Exodus Mission will be held at 8 p.m. June 10 in the home of David and Doreen Hermelin. The mission is open to con- tributors of $5,000 or more to the 1991 Allied Jewish Cam- paign and Operation Exodus. Three pre-mission trips — to Poland, Russia and Hungary, will also be offered. Scholars-in-residence will travel with each group. Following their pre-mission trips, the groups will reunite in Israel. The mission agenda also in- cludes meetings with Israeli officials, cultural activities, social events, archeological explorations, tours and entertainment. Leading the Exodus Mis- sion are Larry Jackier, Dr. Richard Krugel, Joe Orley, Ben Rosenthal and Jane Sherman. For information about the Exodus Mission, call Tom Wexelberg-Clouser at the Jewish Welfare Federa- tion, 965-3939, Ext. 121. UJA Offers Israel Mission New York — The Universi- ty Programs Department of the United Jewish Appeal is planning its second Medical Students Mission to Israel. The mission, held June 10-24, is an opportunity for students to experience Israel, learn about its history, and make an impact on its future. The cost of the mission is $2,550, and all participants will receive a National UPD/UJA subsidy of $1,000 toward this basic cost. It is expected that after the mission, students will return to their campuses inspired and organize much needed UJA/Federation Campaigns. The trip spans 14 days, giv- ing participants the oppor- tunity to see many of Israel's modern and historical land- marks, as well as meeting with prominent Isarelis in the fields of medicine, politics and education. Students will see the ancient ruins of Masada, the Yad Vashem Memorial, visit an Israeli Defense Forces base and talk with soldiers, and see Israel from the inside.
