Synagogue Honors
Literary Graduates

Fourteen members of Adat
Shalom Synagogue will mark
the completion of Hebrew
literary classes at a family
Shabbat service June 1. The
graduation program will
begin at 7:30 p.m.
Hebrew literacy classes are
sponsored by the Adat
Shalom Men's Club. Follow-
ing the Friday evening ser-
vice, families are invited to an
Oneg Shabbat in honor of the
graduates.
This year's graduates are:

Dennis Bernard, Janice Cohen,
Janis Feingold, Nathan Feingold,
Sherri Moroff, Marilyn Rudick,
Carolyn Szlamkowicz, Heidi

Midrasha Plans
Summer Courses

Registrations are being
taken for two courses offered
by the Midrasha-College of
Jewish Studies in its Summer
Institute.
On Mondays and Wednes-
days, June 13-27, from 9:30 to
11:30 a.m., "The Sanctity of
the Land of Israel" will be
taught by Rabbi Rod
Glogower of the Hillel Or-
thodox Union and Judaic
Studies lecturer at the
University of Michigan. Rab-
bi Glogower will analyze the
concept of the sanctity of the
land by examining biblical
talmudic and medieval
sources.
"Judaism and Jewish Iden-
tity in Twentieth Century
America" will be taught by
Todd Endelman, professor of
history at the University of
Michigan at 7:30 p.m.
Tuesdays and Thursdays
June 14-28. Prof. Endelman
will trace the transformation
of Judaism and Jewish iden-
tity in the United States from

the East European immi-
grant earlier this century to
their suburban Americanized
descendants.
Both courses will meet at
the United Hebrew Schools
Building and are available for
Hebrew teacher certification.

Parent-Teacher
Workshop Planned

Temple Emanu-El will hold
a workshop for parents and
teachers at 10 a.m. June 3.
Peter Machinist, University
of Michigan professor will
lead the workshop on bring-
ing meaning to Bible studies
for children called "Ar-
chaeology and the Settlement
of Israel or Did Joshua and
the Israelites Really Conquer
the Land?"
Lunch will be served. There
is a charge for parents.
Babysitting at no charge by
reservations only. There is no
charge to teachers and they
will be given '/2 credit from
Midrasha.
The program is co-
sponsored by the temple,
Wayne State's Center for
Judaic Studies, and the
Midrasha.

Torah Portion
Study Group Begins

A second Conservative
lunch and learn study group
co-sponsored by the Jewish
Theological Seminary and
United Synagogues has
started meeting at noon on
Wednesdays in the Southfield
Civic Center. The class, led by
Rabbi Allan Meyerowitz of
Congregation B'nai Moshe,
studies the weekly Torah por-
tion and Emet VeEmunah, a
statement of principles of
Conservative Judaism.
Another group in Farm-
ington Hills under the leader-
ship of Rabbi Elliot Pachter of
Adat Shalom Synagogue is
studying the process of
Jewish law.
New members are welcome
to join either group. For infor-
mation, call the United
Synagogue office, 855-5950.

Israel Scholarships
Announced

Five individuals have
qualified for scholarship
assistance from the Jewish
Community Center for study
in Israel this summer. These
scholarships are available to
local high school and college
students by funds established
in honor of the Milton J.
Steinhardt family.
The winners are Deja
Dominguez, Shoshana Gar-
din, Ori Lev, Amy Silverton
and Stephen Steinhardt.
