When there is a special
program or service for
Passover or Chanukah or for
the High Holidays or for
Martin Luther King Day or
any of the American nation-
al holidays such as
Thanksgiving, a sea of men
and women visitors, wearing
the light blue JWV caps,
gives eloquent testimony to
the numbers of Jews who
have answered their coun-
try's call to arms over the
years. (In World War II
alone, there were 550,000
Jews in the armed forces of
the United States.)
So when these special
holiday events occur, it is
heartwarming to see the
JWV visitors going to the
wards to get the wheelchair-
bound patients, so that they
can escort them safely to the
chapel or to the auditorium.
Aside from all of the above,
which is important, they
also serve well when as JWV
members, the simple visit to
the bedside of a hospitalized
veteran indicates that the
Jewish community has not
forgotten them, that God has
not abandoned them, espe-
cially if the patient has had
no other visitor for years.
If you do have that special
strength and the "gootskeit"
it takes to visit paraplegics,
remember the story of Cap-
tain Michael Arnovitz, that
strong, self-sacrificing, noble
youth, and remember that
he might have been that
helpless, incontinent, out- of-
touch patient before you.
When we honor our Jewish
Veterans, we bring honor to
ourselves. And we do some-
thing to preserve the Jewish
future.
