to the same old rhetoric — and maybe the same old ter- rorism." Is Walesa A Revisionist? Lech Walesa, hero to the Polish masses, now appears to be posturing as a revi- sionist historian. Poland, he says, is not anti-Semitic. In fact, if any bias does exist, it might well be the fault of the Jews. Walesa's comments ap- peared in an interview last month in the Philadelphia Inquirer Magazine. It was conducted by Judy Bachrach, an American journalist based in Italy. "Sometimes," said the Solidarity leader and 1983 Nobel laureate, "it is Jews who create an anti-Semitic atmosphere in order to get into the limelight, because on the wave of these 'anti' feelings, you can rise in posi- tion." "There isn't anti-Semitism in Poland," he added. "It's just called that at some moments." Walesa spoke to Bachrach through a translator. Accor- ding to New York magazine, she has confirmed the trans- lation of his comments, which she has on tape, through a second translator. This time, he's cited in the New York Times column of his buddy, William Safire, for his stand on federal aid to the arts. Prompted by the furor over a grant to photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, (whose final work before his recent death was widely de- nounced as pornographic), Neusner, a member of the advisory council of the Na- tional Endowment for the Arts, suggested a measure he calls "pro-art, anti- censorship, and anti- pornography." Neusner, whom Safire called a "prickly intellectual giant" and "the nation's foremost and most prolific Judaic scholar," proposed that council meetings be public, federal grants be made to institutions and not to individuals, and that ar- tists seeking federal support "do something more," as Safire wrote, "than let their sexual or psychological prob- lems hang out." Neusner's idea did not grab Safire. Cl 1-11p UYS N' GALS Zip Up Th e HOMELESS!
