ALAN STEWART SWARTZ, 41, of Oak Park, died May 21. He leaves his sister and brother-in-law, Cheryl and Merwyn Herman of Coral Springs, Fla.; two nieces. MEYER-BER ZEFF, 86, of Southfield, died May 24. He leaves his wife, Shejna; daughters and son-in-law, Danielle and Dr. David Susser of Birmingham, Liliane Hershkowitz of Houston, Texas; son, George of Southfield; eight grandchildren. Dr. Sidney Ellias, 81, Osteopath Dr. Sidney S. Ellias, a distinguished member among Detroit's Osteopathic physi- cians, died Sunday at his home in Southfield. He was 81. Dr. Ellias held many posts and accumulated countless awards and honors during his long career in medicine, which began after he receiv- ed a doctorate from the Col- lege of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1934. Among his posts, Dr. Ellias was chief of staff at Art Centre Hospital in Detroit, now Michigan Osteopathic Medical Center, of which he was a founding member. He was chairman of internal medicine depart- ments Art Centre, Detroit Zieger Osteopathic Hospital and Detroit Osteopathic Hospital. Those who knew Dr. Ellias say he was kind, humble and philanthropic. He rarely boasted of his own ac- complishments. Rather, he talked about the achieve- ments of his wife, Helen, his children and his grand- children. On July 4, he and Helen would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. "He was the most compas- sionate man I ever knew," said one of his closest friends, Dr. Milton Joseph, who first met Dr. Ellias in 1929. In addition to his many medical organizations, Dr. Ellias was chairman of the now defunct Osteopathic Division of the Allied Jewish Campaign from 1939 to 1960. He was a member of Temple Israel, B'nai B'rith, the R,oun.- table for Catholics, Jews and Protestants, the United Foun- dation and the Zionist Organization of Detroit. He was also a 32nd degree Mason and the Moslem Shrine. He won two community service awards from the Jewish Welfare Federation. Dr. Ellias, too, was a teacher of doctors. During his career, he was a professor at the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine and the Kirskville (Mo.) College of Osteopathic Medicine. In addition to Helen, he leaves a daughter, Nancy Gor- man of Southfield; sons and daughters-in-law, Franklin and Betty of Farmington Hills, Dr. Andrew and Judi of Colorado Springs, Colo.; sister, Ruth Aftel of South- field; brothers and sisters-in- law, Harold and Betty of Southfield, Dr. Elmer and Peggy of Miami Beach; six grandchildren. He had offices in Bloomfield Hills and was a member of the American and Michigan Dental Associations, Oakland County Dental Society, was a member of the American Academy of Implant Den- tistry, a fellow of the Interna- tional College of Oral Implan- tologists and a fellow of the American Academy of Pros- thodentics. Dr. Ormond was instrumen- tal in developing outdoor camping and tripping pro- grams for Camp Tamarack. He was also an avid scuba diver.
