Our Mission

The Jewish Community Council provides the leadership for the
community relations activities of the metropolitan Jewish community.
In carrying out this task, it speaks for that community, initiates pro-
grams, seeks opportunities for collaboration with other religious and
ethnic communities and coordinates activities for its 250 member
organizations that represent the principal segments of the Jewish
community.

Solidarity with Israel

Momentum for Council's efforts to strengthen our bond with Israel
continued to build this year, with the continuation of some existing
programs and the inception of some new ones.

• The second annual Israel Travel Fair attracted a large crowd, which
sampled Israeli wines, enjoyed Israeli music and gathered
information on a variety of trips to Israel. One lucky attendee won a
free flight to Israel.

• In conjunction with AIPAC, we sponsored a Political Action
Workshop designed to build a groundswell of grassroots political
activists on Israel's behalf.

• Council was host to a number of Israeli scholars and dignitaries
including Moshe Arad, Israeli Ambassador to the United States, who
spoke to an overflow crowd at the Detroit Economic Club.

• Two "youth ambassadors," Israeli high school students, spent three
weeks meeting and speaking with school and religious groups about
life in Israel.

• On a trip led by President Borman and Executive Director Gad-Hart,
Council took a group of state legislators on a tour of Israel. The
group, comprised of Democrats and Republicans, male and female,
Black and White, left Israel with a much greater sensitivity to the
socioeconomic, military and governmental issues facing the Jewish
state.
