the Torah, then we, the
Jewish people, merely have to
tear kriyah once, only for the
parchment, because they can
never destroy our holy letters.
But if it's Jews destroying
their own Ibrah, we must tear
kriyah twice, because a Jew
can destroy even the letters
themselves and cut himself
off from his own future.
He paused, looked into my
eyes for a long moment, and
then left the room. All the
way back to America, I

Jewish informers reported on
any attempt to teach or study
Torah. Therefore, kriyah had
to be torn twice.
But America is different,
right? Back in the States I

A large portion of America
learns Torah, but an even
larger portion is in deep sleep.
This Shavuot, when we stay
up all night, we have to
change the balance. When
sociologists speak about
demographics and percent-
ages, we forget that we are
those percentages. On
Shavuot, our goal should be
to stay awake and greet the
dawn with Torah on our
lips.
