France, these figures have

• Parade magazine reports
that 24 percent of the French
people believe there are too
many Jews in their country.
Seventy-six percent say
there are too many Arabs, 46
percent say there are too
many blacks, 40 percent say
there are too many Asians.
• Newsweek reports that
88 percent of officials in
France's extreme right-wing
National Front party think
Jews have "too much power"
in their country.

Hostages
Get Most
Readers of Year

The release of two Ameri-
can hostages in the Middle
East has attracted more
public interest than any
other news story this year,
according to a survey by the
Times Mirror Center for the
People and the Press.
The poll indicated that 46
percent of the American
public was following "very
closely" the release of
Robert Polhill and Frank
Reed.
News stories next in order
of public interest in April
were:
• Earth Day (followed
closely by 31 percent).
• Lithuania's move for in-
dependence (27 percent).
• Orbiting of the Hubble
Space Telescope and
difficulties with the 1990
census (both were closely
followed by 24 percent of re-
spondents).
