called, is primarily a re-
ligious center, not a college,
Stulberg said. The college is
only an extension of the syn-
agogue.
Because of a recent or-
dinance change, churches
and synagogues are allowed
in areas zoned for residential
use, but universities are not.
Commissioner Donald Eby
said despite the foundation's
claims, he believes the
center is really a college,
complete with student hous-
ing, a library and other
buildings needed for univer-
sity use.
Other commissioners
weren't sure if the college
was actually an extension of
the synagogue or if it was
the primary use. To end the
confusion, commissioners
agreed to ask the township
attorney before discussing
the plans any further. They
hope to have an attorney's
opinion by their next
meeting on June 12. ❑

French Police
Holding 'Heads

Paris (JTA) — The police
are holding 15 young
skinheads for questioning in
the desecration of the Jewish
cemetery at Carpentras,
which took place on or about
May 10.
But they were reported to
have discounted as fake a
claim of responsibility for
the vandalism by an
unknown group with an
Islamic-sounding name.
The skinheads, shaven-
headed youths frequently
linked to the harassment of
Jews and other minorities,
were arrested in the Albi re-
gion of southwestern France.
Seven of them were said to
be already under indictment
for digging up graves in a
cemetery near Albi.
