tradition based on action and
responsibility," Rabbi Ste-
inger says. "It's not the end
but the process that's impor-
tant."
Rabbi Spectre agrees.
"Judaism does not regulate
thought — it regulates action,
and that's the greatness of it.
"We know very little of
death, and what we don't
know we don't make up," he
says. "But as Jews we cannot
believe that life is absurd, and
so we must believe that by be-
ing in this world we can make
it better than we found it."
A Jewish legend, adapted
from the Midrash and con-
tained in Nathan Ausubel's
book Treasury of Jewish
Folklore, affirms the link bet-
ween tikkun haolam, repair-
ing the world, and
immortality.
