Two souls that combine to
create one consciousness are
called complex souls.
This creation of one entity
from two also may occur when
a strong and good soul takes
on a weaker one in an effort
to bring it closer to God. A
weak soul may merit attach-
ment to a strong one because
of an especially kind or good
act it once did, Rabbi Bergs-
tein says.
Souls may even return and
try to completely take over
another, making for the in-
famous "dybbuk," literally
"one attached." Souls who at-
tempt this takeover have com-
mitted a great evil and enter
another body to avoid Gehen-
na, Rabbi Bergstein says.
In the classic Polish-Jewish
film, The Dybbuk, a woman
and her beloved are unable
to wed. Trying desperately to
arrange a marriage with his
sweetheart, the young man
resorts to magic. He dies as a
result, and the woman he
loves is promised to another.
Before her wedding, the bride
comes to the grave of her true
love and asks him to come

dance with her. His soul rises
from the grave and follows
her, later taking over her
body.
But most souls are simply
reincarnated alone, to have
the chance to fulfill more
mitzvot. Usually, they come
back through another body —
though a human soul need
not come back as another
human, Rabbi Bergstein says.
While Jewish souls will
form complex souls only with
other Jewish souls, reincarna-
tion is open to those of all
faiths, Rabbi Bergstein says.
To come back, non-Jewish
souls must fulfill the
Noachide Laws.
Souls may be reincarnated
over hundreds of years, and
one that lingers for too long
is unhealthy. This can be
dangerous, Rabbi Bergstein
says.
He tells the story of Rabbi
Chaim Vital, a 17th Century
kabbalist. Rabbi Vital once
passed by the more than
1,000-year-old grave of a gen-
tile angry with him. The gen-
tile's soul had enough power
to storm up from the grave
