According to a recent
Gallup survey, chocolate is
America's favorite flavor. It
surpassed other leading
flavors, including vanilla, by
a 3-to-1 ratio.
Eighty-four percent of the
households in the United
States use chocolate, whether
in desserts, snacks or bev-
erages, according to the
survey. The survey results
were released by the Choco-
late Manufacturers Associa-
tion of the U.S.A.
Over 50 percent of the wo-
men surveyed said chocolate
is their favorite flavor. Forty-
two percent of the men said
they prefer chocolate to other
flavors like berry, vanilla, ap-
ple, orange and coffee.
The more money Ameri-
cans make, the more likely
they are to choose chocolate
as their favorite flavor, the
Chocolate Manufacturers As-
sociation says.
Younger Americans have a
stronger preference for choco-
late than older Americans,
and people in the western
part of the United States are
more likely to prefer
chocolate than those located
in the eastern part of the
country.

leading beCause the product
contains no cocoa solids,
although some brands con-
tain cocoa butter. But there's
no doubt that its sweet, rich
flavor adds a bonus to des-
serts, whether used alone or
in combination with semi-
sweet chocolate. This com-
bination sends homey bread
pudding high class.
2% cups French bread
strips, about 2 inches
long
1 cup (5 ounces) white
baking pieces with
cocoa butter
% cup light raisins
3 eggs
2 cups milk
% cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
'/4 cup miniature
semisweet chocolate
pieces
In a greased 12- by 81/2-inch
tart pan or shallow dish com-
bine bread strips, white bak-
ing pieces and raisins.
In a large mixer bowl, beat
eggs, milk, sugar and vanilla
until well mixed. Pour over
bread mixture; let stand for
15 minutes so bread will ab-
sorb liquid. Bake in a 375-
degree F oven for 40 to 45
minutes or until a knife in-
serted near the center comes
out clean. Remove pudding to
a wire rack. Sprinkle choco-
late pieces on top. Let pud-
ding cool for 30 minutes.
Serve warm, spooned into
dessert cups.

Dallas (JTA) — A U.S.
district judge imposed stiff
sentences on five leaders of a
Skinhead gang here last
week, two months after they
were convicted on charges of
anti-Semitic and other racist
violence.
An all-white jury found the
five guilty of racially
motivated hate crimes
against minorities, in what
the prosecution called a pro-
longed reign of terror in the
summer of 1988.
It included attacks on a
Jewish community center,
vandalizing several syn-
agogues and beating blacks
and Hispanics in a Dallas
park.
According to testimony,
several of the defendants
planned to pump poison gas

into the air-conditioning
vents of a local temple.
The five ringleaders were
members of a gang called the
Confederate Hammerskins.
Judge Barefoot Sanders
pronounced prison sentences
of from four to nine years on
John Lance Gordo, 19; Sean
Christian Tarrant, 20;
Christopher Barry Greer,
25; Daniel Alvis Wood, 20;
and Michael Lewis
Lawrence, 22.
Wood and Jordan, also
convicted of using a gun to
commit a felony, drew addi-
tional mandatory five-year
sentences for that offense.
Wood offered the FBI in-
formation in return for le-
niency. After sentencing, he
gave the Nazi salute.
