from the muted hues of her
paintings of the 1950s to the
opulent colors of the late
1960s and the somber tones of
her recent work. In all of her
paintings, Frankenthaler is
mainly concerned with what
she calls drawing in color or

DIA Exhibits
'Retrospective'

Forty lyrical canvases by
Helen Frankenthaler will be
on view at the Detroit In-
stitute of Arts June 24-
Sept. 2.
"Helen Frankenthaler: A
Paintings Retrospective"
features key works done bet-
ween 1952 and 1988 in a con-
cisely edited survey. Drawn
from public and private col-
lections, the exhibition
reveals the range of her pain-
ting, from the landmark soak-
stain canvases of the 1950s to
her darker works of recent
years. It is the first full-scale
museum exhibition since
1969 of work by Franken-
thaler.
Working on large canvases
on the floor, she varies her
methods of painting: pouring
as well as brushing paint,
saturating the surface in an
all-over tint, layering veils of

The University Cultural
Center Association of Detroit
will host the fourth annual
Detroit Festival of the Arts
(DFA) Sept. 21-23, in the
University Cultural Center.
Participating in this year's
festival will be about 500
visual artists, musicians and
street performers, with
special emphasis on Michigan
artists.
A hands-on children's fair is
also part of the festival activi-
ty, as are poetry reading
segments and public art
displays. Food vendors and
local restaurants will also
participate.

Monte Nagler
Has Workshop

Photographer and instruc-
tor, Monte Nagler, will
conduct a one-day workshop'
10 a.m.-3 p.m. at Kensington
Metropolitan Park.
Nagler will instruct the
participants on composition,
depth of field, exposure and
light.
The workshop will meet at
Kensington Metropolitan
Park's information center
located on the right just
beyond the entrance booth.
Participants are asked to
bring a brown bag lunch and
to preregister by June 11.

Hosts Conference

A conference on Cultural
Sensitivity in psychotherapy
will be offered by the
Michigan Society for Clinical
Social work 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
June 8 at the Novi Hilton.
Dr. Florence Lieberman,
professor emeritus from
Hunter College School of
Social Work, will discuss the
immigration of Soviet Jews.
Sandy Hyman, director of
Resettlement Service, will
present information.
