Library Gets Jewish History Trove New York (JTA) — A col- lection of memoirs dealing with the American Jewish experience and serving as a primary source of historical and scientific information was donated this week to the New York Public Library by the American Jewish Com- mittee. The archives, which will be open to the public by the end of October, will be per- manently housed in the library's Jewish Division, one of the largest collections of Judaica in the world. "AJC's Oral History Library, once it is ready for use in its new home in corn- ing months, will provide scholars and researchers with a resource of unique substance and breadth, and will mark the first collection in this format to become available in the Central Research Library," said Leonard Gold, chief librarian of the Jewish Divi- sion of the New York Public Library. "The great collections of the Jewish Division and the Oral History Library will enhance one another so that the whole will truly be greater than the sum of its parts," Gold said. The Oral History Library, which was founded in 1969 under the directorship of Irma and Milton Krents, has produced and collected 2,000 memoirs on 7,500 audio and video tapes, resulting in 300,000 pages of printed transcriptions. Among some of the categories of collections, aside from general biography, are the American Jewish Family Across Three Generations, American Women of Achievement, and Jews in theater, broad- casting, sports, politics and civil rights. Among those who have recorded oral histories for the library are composer Aaron Copeland, columnist Art Buchwald, actors Ed Asner and Richard Dreyfus, physicist 1.1. Rabi, playwright Arthur Miller, opera stars Jan Peerce and Beverly Sills, sculptor Jac- ques Lipchitz and baseball stars Hank Greenberg and Kenny Holtzman. The library has also pro- duced two books, A Special Legacy and Voices From the Holocaust, both edited by Sylvia Rothchild. The library will continue to produce oral histories.
