This week, Jordanian security forces killed at least two Palestinians in an effort to contain demonstrations of support by Palestinian refu- gees in the Bakaa refugee camp in Jordan. On Monday, a Palestinian gunman crying vengeance for the Arabs slain at Rishon le-Zion inexplicably fired on a bus in Amman, wounding eight French tourists. More than 7,000 Jorda- nians took to the streets to protest the killings in Israel. There are hard-liners in Israel, like Ariel Sharon, who believe the Arab-Israeli conflict can be solved by pro- claiming Jordan a Palestin- ian state, since most of its population is of Palestinian origin. But most Israelis fear the fall of Hussein would, in fact, make matters much worse for Israel. Jordan con- ceivably could become a new staging ground for terrorist attacks against Israel. ❑ Jewish Telegraphic Agency War Vets To Rededicate Renovated Machpelah RICHARD PEARL $20,490 —700 Just add tax, title, dest. CAVALIER VL COUPE WAS LEADERSHIP DRIVE U A NEW '90 GEO METRO XFI - -ir •-.1 E the reaction of Arab citizens within Israel. Ehud Ya'ari, co-author of Intifada, a new best-seller about the Palestinian upris- ing, warned that Israel's Arab population could be swept into its own intifada, "more dangerous and bloody than what is happening in the territories." Shmuel Toledano, who was Arab affairs adviser to the prime minister from 1966 to 1977, said, "No one should be surprised over what hap- pened" in Israel's Arab community. "One should be more sur- prised how Israel's Arabs succeeded in two years (of the intifada) to overcome their emotions," he said. "The murder in Rishon le- Zion was the trigger which brought out in the open feel- ings of rage and bitterness which had accumulated for years," he said. The events in Jordan were also disturbing for Israeli of- ficials. Last week, Jordanian soldiers halted a "peace march" staged by Palestin- ians near the Allenby Bridge, which links Jordan with the West Bank A merican and Soviet Jewish war veterans will march together Sunday in a rededication ceremony honoring the Jew- ish war dead at the recently renovated Machpelah Cemetery in Ferndale. The May 27 Memorial Day weekend ceremony will feature a color guard leading members of the Jewish War Veterans of Michigan and its Ladies Auxiliary into the cemetery for the 11 a.m. ceremony, which will in- clude a military style gun salute to the war dead. Ely Katz, Michigan JWV commander, and Cantor Hyman Adler of Congrega- tion B'nai David will lead the service. Also par- ticipating will be Milton Klein, JWV national exec- utive committee member from Detroit, and Florence Weber, Auxiliary president. Soviet Jewish war veter- ans have joined Michigan JWV members at Memorial Day ceremonies the past couple of years, according to Katz. This year's ceremony, however, will follow the Michigan JWV's first joint Memorial Day celebration with Soviet vets at JWV headquarters the preceding evening. "We hope more Russian Jewish war veter- ans will join us on Sunday," Katz said. Machpelah has undergone $20,000 in renovations since 1984, when construction began on the new chapel which officially opened last fall, according to Paul Saville, cemetery super- intendent. The new struc- ture includes the cemetery office. The chapel was built by Royal Oppenheim, a son of Machpelah founder David Oppenheim, as a memorial to his parents. It includes a library of Jewish biblical and history books which overlooks a pond which serves as a sanctuary for the ducks living at the cemetery. The pond is dedicated to Royal Oppenheim's wife, Elsa, who died last winter. New landscaping has in- cluded the addition of 600 pine trees and 15 Mount St. Helen's trees which flower with pink blossoms. The trees are part of a five-year plan begun this spring
