Cops Uncover
Kidnap Plot

Montreal (JTA) — Police
are holding four alleged con-
spirators in a plot to kidnap
28-year-old Stephen Bronf-
man, son of Seagram Co-
Chairman Charles Bronf-
man.
The plot was recently
discovered by Montreal
police, during an investiga-
tion of an unrelated homi-
cide. The group's leader was
identified as an unemployed
immigrant, Anton Anghel,
42, who was arrested April
30. His country of origin was
not identified. Another man
charged is Therlegrand
Faustin, 19, who was ar-
rested last Thursday. Police
are looking for a fifth con-
spirator.
The would-be kidnappers
intended to grab Stephen
Bronfman in a staged
automobile accident.
Montreal police are work-
ing together with the private
security guards of Charles
Bronfman, who is also owner
of the Montreal Expos
baseball team.
The Bronfman family is
not new to kidnapping. Some
15 years ago, Sam Bronf-
man, eldest son of Seagram
Chairman Edgar Bronfman,
was reported kidnapped.
Two men were arrested in
that case and charged with
extortion, but they were ac-
quitted of kidnaping charges
after the defense contended
that the victim helped ar-
range the plot. Sam Bronf-
man denied the allegation.
