All beef
aged in
our own
coolers
bar seats is much like before
. . . with street signs like
Fifth Avenue, Bowery,
Seventh Avenue and others
above the group of booths.
Cleanliness, intimate
warmth and fine service were
standouts of our first visit to
C.J. O'Brien's . . . Our
daytime waitress, very plea-
sant and efficient Susan Mau,
returned to fill our stemmed
glass decaf mug with fresh
decaf saying, "Honesty is the
best policy. I really forgot you
were sitting back there" . . .
Susan is a conversation piece
in herself with each ear pierc-
ed 12 times for the row of glit-
tering studs.
VIDEO CRITIQUE ... by
Michael Dembs . . . The Out-
side Chance of Maximilian
Glick . . . "In the tradition of
other Canadian/Jewish
classics like Lies My Father
Told Me and The Appren-
ticeship of Duddy Kravitz
comes this very amusing film
about the coming of age of a
13-year-old boy. Filled with
sage old advice and conven-
tional Jewish wisdom, it will
remind many of TV's The
Wonder Years.
JACK CARTER tells this
one about the two successful
Chicago businessmen, who
hadn't met since they were
classmates in a little
southern Illinois schoolhouse,
meeting in the Loop one
afternoon, and after the usual
wistful reminiscences, one
persuaded the other to try
"potluck" for dinner at his
home . . . "Potluck" wasn't
very good that night . . . An
uncooperative and bored wife
served up some cold cuts and
a can of preserved peaches
and disappeared huffily
toward her bedroom . . . The
host gulped down his last bit
of peach and beamed, "Well,
Joe, now that you've broken
bread at my house you'll have
to ask me to dine at yours
some time soon." . . . "Not a
bad idea," agreed Joe sourly.
"How about tonight?"
