ing "I'd Love to Get You on a
Slow Boat to China."
"My mother inspired me to
sing," she said. "She played
the piano, and I used to sing
while she played."
As Walters got older, she
sang with local bands in
Detroit. One of her biggest
singing thrills came when
she, her husband and a bun-
ch of friends went to see The
Lettermen perform at a local
nightclub.
"Part of The Lettermen's
act was to come out to the
audience and stick a
microphone in front of some-
one's face. Everybody at our
table was pointing to me. So,
I sang a couple bars, and
they grabbed me, took me up
on stage and had me sing a
complete song with them.
They backed me up. It was
such a fun night."
Since then, Walters has
sang the national anthem
and "God Bless America" at
three Detroit Piston games
in the mid-and late 1980s.
Singing isn't Walters' only
talent; she can also act. In
the 1970s and 1980s, she ap-
peared in ORT and
Hadassah shows. In 1983,
she played her favorite role,
Mama Rose in a local com-
munity theater's production
of Gypsy.
"I saw Ethel Merman do it

years ago when she was here
with the show; it just stuck
with me, and I loved it," she
said. "It was the most
wonderful show."
Walters, who has appeared
locally in The Pajama Game,
Annie Get Your Gun, Damn
Yankees and Fiddler on the
Roof, has also played dra-
matic roles in Invitation to a
Murder, Pack of Lies and
The Mystery of Edwin
Drood.
