Abortion and Recycling

Abortion rights and recy-
cling in Broward county were
the two major topics discussed
during a meeting of the Na-
tional Council of Jewish wo-
men Plantation section.
"Abortion is one of the
issues which will never go
away," said Eilleen Cudney, le-
gislative assistant to Represen-
tative Ben Graber and one of
the speakers at the NCJW
meeting. Women are in control
of their reproductive lives and
need to be in touch with legis-
lation to make their choices
knowo.
Cudney said the Florida le-
gislature is in session for 60
days, and legislators will intro-
duce two bills concerning the
abortion issue.
The first bill, under Rep-
resentative Fred Lippman,
"would create a one year study
to see if any new legislation is
required for further restrictions

abortion clinics," Cudney said.
The second bill deals with
the Senate Health Care Corn-
mime and will be opposed by
Representative Graber*s office,
she said. The bill would make'
public all the names of those
who have abortions."
In addition, this bill would
provide criminal penalties for
people who block entries of
clinics.
Cudney said this part of the
bill has been a big problem.
Last month in Broward the of-
fices of Graber, who is also a
physician, and Joyce Tarnow's
clinic were harassed by anti-
abortionists. Judge Arthur
Sicken entered a restraining or-
der for the protestors not al-
lowing them to harass patients
and not to be closer than 15
feet from any Broward county.

"In Florida, the laws are
complicated because the Su-
preme Court issued a privacy
provision for women to make
their own choices," Cudney
said.

Tells Israel to look.

Mideast where Israelis and
Palestinians "have a similar
common interest in peace
and stability. And there, as
in South Africa, each side
can vindicate that interest
only by negotiating with the
other."
Protests by some Israelis
that they cannot meet with
their enemies, said Lewis,
are similar to the argument
used for four decades by
South Africa's government.
This changed, he wrote,
when it realized it "could not
achieve peace without in-
cluding those whom they re-
jected as 'terrorists.' "
