iz Walters has been
singing since she was
old enough to talk and
acting since she was old
enough to read. But appear-
ing on TV game shows came
much later in life for the
Southfield resident.
A couple years ago, she
was planning a California
vacation and wanted to try
out for a game show. Trying
unsuccessfully to reach
"Jeopardy," Walters, a lover
of puzzles, rang. "Wheel of
Fortune" — and got
through.
After purchasing two
round-trip tickets and three
vowels, Walters was ready
for the challenge.
She went to an audition,
which included a written

test with 15 partially com-
pleted puzzles; she had five
minutes to solve a minimum
of eight puzzles.
With 60 others taking the
test, Walters was one of
seven who passed and was
invited to take part in the
next plateau — mock
"Wheel of Fortune" games.
The next day, Walters
received a letter of con-
gratulations; she was chosen
to be a contestant on "Wheel
of Fortune."
Flying back to Los Angeles

five months later, Walters
took along a good luck
charm: her son, Kenny. And
she ended up winning big
bucks and getting the
chance to play the bonus
round.
The clue: people. Walters
was asked to choose five con-
sonants and a vowel. She
chose: L, S, T, R, N and E.
Vanna turned the lit
letters: E S — — — — S.
Walters had 15 seconds to
solve the puzzle. And she did
— with 13 seconds to spare.

She answered, "Eskimos,"
and was joined on stage by
Kenny, her aunt Bernice
Dryman, niece Toby Silver-
man, friend Harlene Sosin —
and a new Corvette.
Walters enjoyed being on
television so much that
when she returned to
Detroit, she decided to audi-
tion for TV commercials.
Ironically, she was cast to
star as a contestant in a
game show commercial.
Last October, she did three
commercial spots for "Fami-
ly Feud." The game show's
host, Ray Combs, came into
town to appear in the com-
mercial, which was filmed at
a diner in Oak Park.
Long before "The Wheel"
was invented, when Walters
was just a young girl, she
appeared on television's "Ed
Mackenzie's Saturday Par-
ty" and "Auntie D's," sing-
