added, explaining that
Shalhomo received no Jew-
ish funds for this conference
or the World Conference of
Lesbian and Gay Jews it
hosted a few years ago.
"It's the Department of
Culture of the City of
Amsterdam we depend on,"
he said.
The conference organizers
stressed the need for nation-
al movements to deal with
the concerns of Jewish les-
bians and gays.
"Up till now, in France
and in the German-speaking
countries such as Germany,
Switzerland and Austria,
the existence of Jewish
homosexuality has been de-
nied," Buys said. "We, in
Holland and Britain finally
got accepted as a group.
"What we tried to show
the other participants at the
conference," Buys said, "was
that they, too, should
struggle to fight to have
themselves accepted as a
group of Jewish homosex-
uals in the Jewish commun-
ity of their town or country."
The first success was a
decision by the 15 Berliners
present to establish a group
in their city.
Less certain were the two
Hungarians. Eastern Euro-
pean society still does not
accept homosexuality, and
being Jewish makes it even
harder to be part of society
without losing identity, they
said.
The conference held
workshops and group discus-
sions on such topics as AIDS
and "coming out" to one's
family.
Had the conference been
held a week later, it would
have read a Torah portion
from Leviticus that de-
nounces sexual relations
between men as an
"abomination." That is the
reason why most traditional
Jews are intolerant of les-
bian and gay Jews.
Israel's Inflation
Rises In April

of-living index rose by 2.5
percent in April, the highest
monthly increase since April
1989, the Central Bureau of
Statistics announced recent-
ly.
April is traditionally a
month of high increase in
the cost of living, particular-
ly as it marks the beginning
of the fiscal year, April 1.
A major component in last
month's living expense rise
were housing costs, in-
cluding rents and
maintenance.
