group of Jewish sin-
gles at the Birm-
ingham Temple are
trying to provide an alter-
native to the dance-hall
blues: community service.
"We realized how singles
are tired of singles dances,
where there's a form of rejec-
tion inherent in the event: if
you don't get asked to dance,
or you ask but are refused,
you feel badly," explained
Rhonda Shapiro of West
Bloomfield, co-chairman of
the new group with Doreen
Gordon of Birmingham.
"And we also felt that a
community service project
would be a lot more mean-
ingful than weekend singles
workshops and dances,"
Shapiro said.
The outgrowth of a discus-
sion which took place during
the temple's annual
February singles weekend
was the Community Service
Singles, which is aimed at
giving singles interested in
community work a basis for
forming new friendships.
Last Saturday, several
CSS members went to their
first project, coordinating
the softball throw during the
Special Olympics in Royal
Oak.
The group also has vol-
unteered to work at the
Capuchin Soup Kitchen,
with dates in June and
September scheduled; Yad
Ezra, possibly on Tuesdays,
and at the Michigan
Humane Society.
CSS will serve meals at
Capuchin, will pack and
dispense food at Yad Ezra

An Oakland University
Continuum Center workshop,
"Handling The Pressures of
Single Life," to be offered
May 22, 29, June 5 and 12,
7-10 p.m. on the campus of
Oakland University, will look
at the complex personal
issues of single living.
The four-session program,
led by communications
specialist Barbara Halpern, is
an exploration of the choices
singles face, such as starting
and ending relationships;
wants, needs and self-esteem;
brief encounters and sayng
"yes to sex."
There is a charge. For infor-
mation, call the Continuum
Center, 370-3033.

and will walk dogs and
handle puppies at the
Humane Society, according
to Shapiro.
When the group was an-
nounced, she said, 50 per-
sons expressed interest.
"We're not looking for one-
on-one volunteer tasks, but
for things that require us to
work as a group" of three to
15 people, said Gordon, the
other co-chairman. "We are
trying these organizations
first. We are always open to
new suggestions."
For CSS information, call
Shapiro, 683-2629; or Gor-
don, 645-2080. ❑
